Bicycle Brakes Type

Bicycle Brakes Assembly – Which One To Choose?

In simple language, “Bicycle Brakes” are a mechanism that stops your bike from moving further. Furthermore, It refers to both the levers at the bars and the braking mechanism that stops the wheel from turning. There are few options available from which you can choose depending on the type of ride you do.

Bicycle Brake Types & Uses

This article will have a detailed description of the types of bicycle brakes available and their uses. Let’s elaborate further.

“V” Brakes Or Rim Brakes

Bicycles Brakes
“V” Brakes Or Rim Brakes On A Bicycle

Mostly you see the road bikes & Hybrids equipped with V brakes, I have not seen many MTB’s with this kind of brake mechanism, however, I am sure there are bikes. Furthermore, rim brakes feature pads that grip onto the wheel rims. Let’s take a look at the PROS and CONS of using V brakes.

  • Well, V brakes or Rim brakes are economical as compared to disc brakes. The assembly and the brake pads are easy to replace and are readily available in the market.
  • The negative about V brakes is that they wear out after a certain distance covered by your bike. Furthermore, with usage over a period of time, the rim of the wheel also wears out. This leads to wheel replacement. These brakes are less effective in wet & muddy conditions. They also need a considerable amount of finger effort in order to stop.

Disc Brakes – “Mechanical & Hydraulic”

Bicycle Brakes
Disc Brakes In Bicycle Brakes!

These are now the most common brake type available. Almost majority of bikes now, MTB, Hybrid, and road bikes are coming with disc brakes over a certain budget level. These feature brake pads that grips onto a brake rotor mounted to the wheel hub. There are two types of disc brakes available.

Hydraulic Brakes

Hydraulic brakes are used when you need stronger braking. Most noteworthy that these brakes come with self-adjusting pads which adjust themselves when you brake to avoid brake pad wear.

Mechanical Brakes

Mechanical brakes work similar to hydraulic brakes. The difference is that these need manual adjustments.

Let’s take a look at the PROS and CONS of using disc brakes.

  • More consistent braking in all conditions. These are cheaper when replacing as you just need to replace a worn rotor than a whole wheel. Performance is amazing in steep decline and wet terrains and less finger strain as compared to v braking system.
  • Disadvantages being that they are more difficult when it comes to inspect pad wear and replace pads. Hydraulic brakes are more expensive to service.

Coaster Brakes – BMX, Kid’s & Cruiser Bikes

bicycles brakes
Coaster Brakes Setup!

You must have seen all those BMX videos, rider doing stunts on their bikes. If you noticed the BMX bikes move forward when the rider pedals and also, it stops when rider turn the pedal backwards. Exactly! That is the coaster bike setup.

Let’s take a look at the PROS and CONS of using coaster brakes.

  • Firstly these brake comes with a low maintenance. Secondly, people with limited strength can use it very well. Like them kids! Even people with limited hand strength of no hands, like parathletes, can use them. They also work in any weather conditions.
  • The disadvantages being that these brakes cannot be used with rear derailers. Causes a lot of skids, and hence accident prone. Also once you stop it is difficult to start riding again if the pedals are in starting positions.

Drum Brakes

A typical drum brake setup!

Lastly, drum brakes have a little typical assembly. They are activated by levers on your handlebars and are integrated within your wheel hubs. If you look at the picture closely you will find how the name drum brake got its name.

Let’s take a look at the PROS and CONS of using drum brakes.

  • Advantages: Weather resistant; generally require very little maintenance.
  • Disadvantages: If a drum wears out, the hub and often the wheel need to be replaced; tend to be heavier than other brake styles. Hence they add extra weight to your bike.

Summing Up

So next time when you are out purchasing a bike, so look at the brake types available. Personally, I am more inclined towards disc break because of obvious reasons.

Avoid Lower Back Pain While Cycling

My first bike was a Huge HDT 10. Whenever I rode this bike, I used to get lower back pain. Furthermore, the pain started after 20 to 25 km of riding. Cycling back pain is common yet can be avoided with a proper bike fit and other factors involved.

How to avoid lower back pain while cycling
In frame: Puneet check out his Instagram Profile

Now I ride a Merida big 7  & a Polygon road bike and with no back pain. Yes, I took a few basic and simple steps to curb this lower back pain of mine. The results are good and now I ride pain-free.

With that note in mind, let me tell you the effective steps I took to curb the back pain I had. This article has a lot of contributions from a lot of cyclists from the riding groups in my city which is Jaipur.

This is what they have to say!

“In my experience, many cyclists are riding bikes that are too big for them and many cyclists lack proper flexibility and/or their core strength is lacking. Take the time and have your bike fitted to your body. Back pain can also arise from anatomical causes like leg length discrepancy or misalignment of your spine”

Professional cyclists from the city of Jaipur

The Three Factors Leading To Lower Back Pain While Cycling

There are only 3 factors contributing to the pain, which I ignored the first time I rode my bike. Let’s take a look at these factors one by one.

Lower back pain due to improper bike fit

The most important factor contributing to back pain is the bike fit. A not a lot of bike shop owners do this, as they are more concerned about selling bikes than making you go through the proper bite fit. This is something that you should always do before purchasing a bike.

A proper bit fit is an important factor when it comes to reducing lower back pain.

Let’s understand more as to why a proper bike fit is so important?

  • Improve overall rider comfort
  • Help prevent cycling-induced repetitive stress injuries
  • Reduce or eliminate back, knee, neck, and wrist pain
  • Reduce or eliminate “hot foot”
  • Bike fit reduce or eliminate saddle discomfort and genital numbness
  • Reduce or eliminate numbness in the hands and fingers
  • Reduce rider fatigue

A good fit can also improve riding performance because it allows the rider to use multiple muscle groups in the most effective and efficient manner.

“Take help from a professional, do a proper bike fit and you have taken half of the factor which induces the back pain”

Core Muscle Stability can avoid lower back pain

Another factor and a big one after the bike fit. I am literally struggling at this and trying different exercises. However, if I take a look at my cycling journey, I have improved a lot and substantially reduced my lower back pain. However, as per my discussion with my professional cyclists, is important to have a daily routine of core exercises. Here is an exercise chart for your reference.

Core exercises can help you in making your core strong so that you can last longer on your cycle without any discomfort.
Simple plank exercises help in strengthening your core!

Another add-on!

Simple yoga poses for a stronger core.

We recently had International Yoga Day and stressing the benefits of Yoga, It does help us in strengthing our core.

Click on the image for an enlarged view.

Many yoga poses can improve core strength and help you eliminate back pain when you cycle for long distances.

This image is just a guide for Yoga poses that can help you to get your core stronger.

Try these poses and I am sure you are going to feel you core getting stronger.

Riding Style of a cyclist

Lastly, it depends on the way you ride. A lot of people will try to educate you about correct riding styles, however, listen only to professionals. Over the years, I have met a lot of cyclists,  and everyone has a different riding style.

A proper bike fit and strong core is essential for reducing back pain.
That’s Jamshed my cycling buddy

I would say there is no set riding style to follow. A 100% ride guide is not available. However, you need to find yourself a riding style that suits your body and does not land you up in any trouble.

Ride with professionals, join a good group in your town. In case you are in Jaipur please check out my article on cycling groups in Jaipur.

Summing Up

Furthermore, while talking with professional cyclists and doctors who are into cycling, they stressed some important factors. Factors that will help you in curbing this lower back pain. They suggested that the cyclist should have a good night’s sleep, have a proper diet. They also suggested that warm-up and cool-down exercises are a must.

A cyclist should also take breaks and rest in the middle of the ride to avoid any chance of overstressing the body.

“So, in the end, I would say that the three contributing factors to your lower back pain are no bike fit being done, poor riding style, and a weak core. If you take care of these three things, the chances of pain happening while cycling would be less considerably”

Professionals cyclists and medical professionals: Please feel free to add anything that I may have missed, in the comments below.

This article is based on the contribution of my personal experience and with the help of my cyclist friends. Please consult professional medical personnel if you are experiencing lower back pain. Please take help from a professional cyclist, while doing a bike fit and choosing the right riding style.

So this brings us to the end of the article, if you have any questions please leave them in the comment section below. I would love to answer them for you. Happy cycling!

The local people there are great fans of Indian film stars like Raj Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and Mithun Chakraborty, while the younger ones especially enquired about Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai, he said.

When he went into a house the family was watching an old Raj Kapoor starrer, Francis recalled He hopes to reach Moscow by June 21, said it is his long-cherished dream to meet Messi.

Indian Cyclist Getting Into Russia

When he entered Russia, the security officials who allowed them after checking his World Cup fan ID, were very curious to know about Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan.

“I hope I will reach Moscow within a week and I will watch the group match between France and Denmark. This journey is a wonderful experience for me and I will definitely make it into a book. I stayed in tents in order to save the money on the way to Russia” Said Clifin!

The people and the officials of all the countries I traveled gave me a good treat when they know I am an Indian. I also met Malayalees in Azerbaijan, who were doing various jobs there. They treated me like a brother and no words to explain my gratitude to them,” he said.

Bike Tire Sizes Explained

How To Choose Bike Tires Sizes?

I ride almost like 3 to 4 times a week. I own an MTB, A Merida 40 D big seven. Depending on the type of ride you do, it is important to find out which is the apt tire type for you. In this article, I have explained different bike tire sizes which are available.

Check out my last article about choosing the right bike

How to choose correct bike tire size for your bike?
How to choose correct bike tire sizes for your bike?

Let’s take this step by step and understand each aspect of determining the correct tire size.

How To Determine Your Bike Tire Sizes?

Every tire has a size value embossed on the side. For instance, my mountain bike has 27.5 X 2. Let’s understand as per bike types.

Mountain Terrain Bikes
Merida big 7 40D
Merida big 7 40D

On a mountain bike, you will have numbers embossed on the side of the tires like 27.5 X 2 in my bike. Let us understand what these numbers signify. These numbers say 27.5″ is the approximate outer diameter by the width 2″.

Now, these number depends on the type of bike that you are using. A cross-country bike will have bike tire sizes between 1.9″ to 2.25″ width. Trail and MTB’s tires usually have the width between 2.25″ to 2.24″. Finally, the downhill bikes which undergo extreme terrain had tire width up to 2.5″ or more.

Road Or Touring Bikes
Bike Tire Sizes In Road Bikes!
Bike Tire Sizes In Road Bikes!

As compared to MTB, a road bike is faster. The credit goes to their tire size. A number combination around road bike usually reads as 700 X 23. KWhat this means is that 700 is the number that tells you about the outer diameter of your tire in millimeters, furthermore, 23 is the tire width again in millimeters.

Most racers run 700 tires in widths ranging from 18 to 23mm which is the narrowest options. In addition to, those who live for epic tours are more likely to be riding tires in widths ranging from 25 to 28mm for a bit more stability and comfort.

Cyclocross Bike Tyre Sizes
Cyclocross Bike!
Cyclocross Bike!

The major differences between a road bike and cyclocross bike are the frame geometry and the wider clearances. Cyclo-cross bikes have larger tires for mud and other debris that they accumulate.

A 29er
A 29er bike!
A 29er bike!

A lot of my friends ride 29ers these days. The good thing about 29ers is that these tires are designed to roll more easily over technical trail sections and through mud and sand. Cornering and climbing traction may also be better due to their increased contact with the trail.

“Now when we are done with understanding bike tire sizes, let’s talk about tire treads’

Understanding Bike Tyre Treads

Treads By Definition: The tread of a tire or track refers to the rubber on its circumference that makes contact with the road or the ground.

Bottom Rule: More the treads in the tire, results in more grip. This also means that the resistance would be greater in case of more treads. It is important to balance between the two to meet your requirements.

Let’s understand different tire treads.

Slick Bike TIre Type

Designed for the road, city/commuter, touring and mountain bikes, slicks appear almost smooth, with a barely perceptible tread pattern. Slicks are designed for smooth surfaces like asphalt, Slickrock and groomed singletrack (with the width of the tire determining the best use). In other words, these kinds of tires are best suited for road bikes. You can alter these tires in a Hybrid bike or an MTB as per your ease, however, due to change geometry, the performance would not be as equal to the slick tires being used in a race geometry road bike. Go for these type of threads if you want to go fast and frequently participate in race events.

Semi-Slick Bike Tires

These tires are designed with a smooth center, for minimal rolling resistance and faster acceleration, and aggressive treads on the side to help with cornering. They’re used for mostly smooth surfaces with some off-road applications. These kind of tires are best for Hybrid bikes.

Inverted Treads Tires

Tires designed with an inverted tread have more grip and rolling resistance than slicks. However, less rolling resistance. Use these tires if you suspect you might venture off asphalt or ride on roads with lots of ruts and potholes like MTB tracks.

Bike Tire Valves

When it comes to valves, there are two types available to us. This is based on the investments that you are willing to up in your bike.

Presta Valves

These are more commonly seen on higher end bikes. I have seen them specifically on expensive road bikes till now. These are thinner than their counterparts. These valves have built-in capping system that you lose first to fill up the air from the pump and then tighten when you are done filling up the air.

Schrader valves

These are seen in less expensive and mid-range bikes. I have the same on my bike. These are wider than Presta valves. Schrader won’t even fit in a Presta-size hole. If your wheel has a Schrader-size hole, it is possible to get an adapter so that you can safely run Presta valves. However, this is generally not recommended.

Summing Up

I ride an MTB, you might ride a hybrid or a road. Furthermore, it is very important to choose right bike tire sizes. It affects your bike performance as a whole. Make sure that you have the aptest tire in your bike and do consult a professional while deciding this.

I hope this article would have been some help to you. Let me know what are your views about bike tire sizes and which one do you use?

Fighting Headwinds While Cycling

Let’s talk about headwinds while cycling. My friends did over a 100 km ride this weekend. All they complained about was riding in strong headwinds. There is no way to fight mother nature, however, do we have a way around headwinds while cycling? Furthermore, can we ease up our riding in strong headwinds? Riding in strong headwinds is an art. Let’s find out more about it.

Headwind While Cycling!

When I ride, I usually look out for headwind. This is because I want to get as many good stats on my STRAVA. At times riding against the headwind, you start feeling tired quickly. The idea is to relax and use headwinds to your advantage.

Ways To Counter Headwind While Cycling

Let’s take few ways by which we can counter headwind while cycling. Here are some tips to help you, both physically and mentally, when you’re riding into a headwind.

Headwind Blocker & Drafting

I do this a lot. This is quite mean way of looking at headwind. However, I do this very often while riding in strong headwinds. I usually utilize the strongest rider in the group to lead the riders and all the riders ride or in other words draft behind the strongest rider.

Let’s Understand What Is Drafting From A Professional Rider?

Drafting is an important strategy in cycling. This reduces the efforts of riders when riding behind a more experienced and strong rider. The idea is to use the strongest rider to beat the headwind. Riding behind another rider shelters you from the worst of the wind, and makes pedaling much easier.

When we’re riding at 30km/h on a flat road, wind resistance accounts for approximately 80% of the total resistive force. When we increase our speed to 50km/h, wind resistance increases to a massive 94%. Quite simply, the greater the speed, the greater the drag. And the greater the drag, the greater the benefit to riding in someone’s slipstream.

Difference between the two cycle tires when drafting is of mere inches. The rider on the front will be using significantly more energy than those behind and therefore if there is a difference of ability and you want to keep the pace as high as possible, the strongest riders should spend the most time on the front.

Get Into An AeroDynamic Position

Get into an aerodynamic position

When you cycling against headwinds, the resistance of the air increases. The way to cut down this resistance is to minimize your own drag. When you ride your cycle the drag is basically you and your bike. Your body constitutes 80% of the drag and rests 20% is off the bike.

You can reduce both of them. Anything you can do to reduce your frontal area is a bonus. If you’re on a road bike, get onto the drops, and if you’re not, keep your body low and your elbows in.

Just imagine you’re playing hide and seek with the wind, and you’re on ‘hide’. Imagine your body like a flag in the wind, because that’s basically what you are.

Check The Clothes You Wear

Do not wear loose clothing while cycling. No part of your clothes should flat out in the wind. It sounds insignificant, but in a severe headwind, you will really notice the difference.

The more the flapping more the resistance and the drag. If you know it’s going to be windy, opt for a closer fitting kit. If you find you get blasted whilst out, zip up the zips you have (right to the top!) remove anything you don’t need.

Ride planning needs to be done to battle headwinds While Cycling

riding in strong headwinds requires great deal of planning

Most of the riders check the weather before heading out. I know because I do the same. Always remember, if you encounter a headwind on the way to your destination, you will get a tailwind as well while returning. Use it to your benefit.

If you’re riding a loop, you’d probably rather start out riding into a headwind, and then enjoy the easy push back of a tailwind on the way home. This will initially feel like an awful decision, but you’ll change your mind on the home straight when you barely have to pedal. Phew!!!!

Use Your Gears Wisely

Use gears wisely!

In any type of bike that you purchase, gears are to be used effectively. We all know that gear selection is important whilst climbing, but do you keep it in mind when it comes to dealing with headwinds?

The higher your gear, the more resistance the bike throws up. So, if you’re already struggling with the added kickback from the headwind, churning your normal gear is probably not a good idea.

If you have a long slog into the wind ahead of you click into a gear that is easier to pedal. Do not drain yourself against the headwind, wait for that lovely tailwind.

Be Mentally Strong Against Strong Headwinds While Cycling

One of my rider friends did 170 km while other did 70 in the same headwinds. The rider who did 170 km was tough in his head, the second rider lost the battle in the head first. Mentally you will have to be tough and if needed make small goals and milestones. Half of the battle when you’re faced with a long stretch of headwind is in your head.

It can be disheartening to be riding twice as hard as normal, yet going twice as slowly. Remember that the problem is the wind, not you. Any questions please drop in the comments and I will answer you back.

I found that not a lot of articles exist on the worldwide web when it comes to cycle insurance covers. So I decided to dig up a little and create this article for people who want to purchase expensive imported bikes. Yet, be on the safer side when it comes to anything hazardous which happens with the bike.

Let’s Find Out Which Companies in India Provide Bicycles Insurance Policy

There are not just pedal and bike insurance covers available in the market., however, your gadgets can be insured too. Gadgets like your cycling bags, locks, lights, stats meters, and other distance & cadence measuring systems come at a cost. Most noteworthy is that these gadgets are a costly affair. I went to buy a normal light for my bike. The best one available in the market is Sigma Buster, which I got for over 2000 INR. Imagine a light!

Insurance Is Available For Road, Hybrid & MTB Bike

Bicycle Insurance in India is available for every kind of bike that you purchase. Expensive imported bikes may have high premium costs than cheap bikes.  Let’s list the name of companies in India, who provide bicycle insurance in India.

General Terms & Conditions Applicable

I went through most of the insurance companies’ terms and conditions. They are usually the same. Few changes here and there. Please consult your insurance exec in case of more detailed T&C.

Section I-Loss of bike or damage of bike

It covers the insured against loss or damage to any pedal cycle caused by accidental external means by fire, external explosion or lightning or burglary, housebreaking, larceny or theft, accidental external means, or by a malicious act.

Section II-Liability to Third Party

It covers the Insured against all sums including the claimant’s costs and expenses, which the insured shall become legally liable to pay in respect of the death of or bodily injury to any person or damage to property.

Insurance Options For Bicycle Insurance

Bicycle insurance is not a very frequent and daily affair for insurance companies. This insurance as a product is always listed under “Other products” in their product catalog section.

New India Insurance

New India pedal insurance, insures your bike against damage and theft. Not just your bike but your expensive gadgets too. One of my friends who got the insurance done from New India Insurance for his bike had to pay a minute amount. Below is what He paid as he said.

Insurance premium came to 442 INR for a total insured amount of 20,060 INR which included accessories like cyclocomp, bottle, Bontrager stand.

Oriental India Insurance

The Oriental Insurance Company Ltd. is a public sector general insurance company of India. This insurance company also provides pedal insurance, furthermore for expensive bikes. For the plan, you need to meet an Insurance exec of the company. There is not much information given online for the same. I recommend meeting an insurance rep from the company.

SUMMING UP

Now I just example of two insurance companies. Bike shops have tie-ups with different insurance companies. In addition to selling bikes a lot of bike stores are offering insurance as well. Mostly from 3rd party companies and not the store itself.

I hope you liked the article. Please let me know if I have missed any point here. This is just the tip of an iceberg, once you start inquiring about cycle insurance, there is going to be a lot of complex things coming on your way. So, always take help from the insurance exec and someone who is into the insurance sector.
