The Beautiful Journey From Jaipur to Manali

Jaipur to Manali is a road trip that I just can’t say No to. This is because I have a good circle in and around Manali and off-course, the place offers peace and serenity which I am unable to get in the city life.

Manali, one of the most popular tourist attractions in India, is considered a paradise for a variety of reasons. It is no doubt that the beautiful and picturesque landscape of Manali combined with its lustful charm and scenery leaves everyone wanting more. Not only that, it manages to make people fall in love with it at first sight as well.

Jaipur to Manali – Story Begins

I wanted to go to the mountains taking my bike. But this was a last-minute decision as I thought of renting a bike in Manali itself instead of taking my own bike. We boarded Volvo from Jaipur to Chandigarh. This was the first leg of our journey from Jaipur to Manali.

These are sleeper Volvos with big enough compartments to hold cycles. You do not even have to disassemble them.

Just keep them as it is! PS*: There is no direct bus from Jaipur to Manali. Earlier there used to be, but that bus which was operated by RSRTC has been discontinued because of COVID. Fewer passengers!

We boarded the bus at 9:30 PM in the evening and reached Chandigarh early at 6:30 AM. Now since Chandigarh is close to Manali and the number of travelers is more.

There are a lot of cab operators that can take you to Manali for INR 1000 per person. Luckily we got an Innova with a carrier on top, this was perfect as our bikes were on the career and we were off to Manali.

The consensus among people is to visit Manali during winter, and I wholeheartedly agree as well. The reason for the same is SNOW. I don’t think a lot of people would pass on the idea of playing in the snow and building snowmen unless you are a buzzkill.

Manali is a dream place for adventure-loving trekkers and mountain lovers. Nestled between the rocky hills and mountain valleys, Manali captivates the viewer with its never-ending charm.

The lovely rivers, the fog that envelops the atmosphere, and the lingering aroma of the pine trees are all a treat for your senses.

As fun and exciting as the destination (Manali) is, don’t you think the journey to Manali should be equally fun and exciting. The answer is yes; indeed, the journey to Manali is quite simply lit, fun, and exciting.

Depending on your budget and time, you can decide whether to travel by air, train, or road.

Options Galore

There are no airports or railway stations in Manali. So, the best option is to consider the closest airport or railway station to Manali. If your budget allows you to take a flight, you should consider boarding the Air India flight from Delhi, which will take you to Bhuntar in Kullu.

Bhuntar is the closest airport to Manali, and it is 50 kilometers away from Manali. After reaching Bhuntar, you can take a taxi or some other public transport like the bus to reach Manali.

How to reach Manali?

Manali to Jaipur route: If you live in Jaipur, then you must be wondering how to reach Manali from Jaipur. Unfortunately, there is no direct flight or train from Jaipur to Manali.

You have to take a bus or a cab to either Delhi or Chandigarh from Jaipur to reach Manali.

1. Delhi route – If you choose to take the Delhi route, then you can book a flight with Air India and fly to Bhuntar. Avoid this as I hate getting stuck in Delhi’s traffic.

2. Chandigarh route – If you take the Chandigarh route, then you can board the Himalayan Bulls, and it will take you to Bhuntar airport. Or take a cab from the Chandigarh bus stand.

How to reach Manali by train?

If you are wondering how to reach Manali by train, you should consider a train that operates between Delhi and Amritsar. Ambala Cantt, which is the closest railway station to Manali, lies on the Delhi-Amritsar route.

You can take a cab or a bus from Ambala Cantt to get to Manali. As compared to flights, trains are more enjoyable if you are traveling with a large family or a group of friends. Not only is it relatively cheaper but you can also enjoy the window-side sightseeing by train.

How to reach Manali by road?

You can also take the road and travel by bus or drive there yourself. The best option would be to hire a cab that can get you all the way to Manali.

Delhi to Manali

The roads of Delhi and Manali are connected through NH-21 and NH-1 highways. Highways are filled with large trucks running up and down the road.

The drive can be a little rough as a result of that. The drive-by car can prove to be pure bliss as long as you don’t run out of fuel and your rental can stay functional.

Our Travel Story Continues from Jaipur to Manali

As for myself and my friends, we left for Chandigarh from Jaipur late at night by Volvo.

By the next morning, we found ourselves at the Chandigarh bus stand.

Jaipur to Manali Continue…

After arriving at Chandigarh, we decided to book a cab to Manali. Manali is about 300 Km away from Chandigarh.

It took about 8 hours to reach Manali. Along the way, we saw various hotels, religious places, tourist spots, etc. The whole road that connects Bhuntar to Old Manali is just as wicked as the place discussed extensively in this article.

Once we arrived in Manali, we immediately checked into our hotel room. There are a lot of fancy hotels for accommodation to choose from. If you are tight on budget, you can even avail something more affordable and financially convenient.

If you are someone who loves “luxury” more than anything, the place offers hotels that would exceed your expectations.

Luckily we had a friend who runs a cafe by the name of Cafe Babushka in Vashisht, so we kinda bunked there for two days.

Check-in

After checking in at the cafe and getting fresh, we went sightseeing. We roamed through the old streets of Manali. The lovely fragrance that the beautiful morning of Manali exudes is truly captivating and blinding.

Sightseeing

We went to see the local monasteries and temples of Manali. I can’t forget the feeling of experiencing this spiritual side of Manali as it was truly a sight that will forever be etched in my memory. As Chief Seattle once said, “Take only memories, leave only footprints.”

Breakfast

We also grabbed something to eat at one of the traditional cuisine restaurants at Old Manali. We enjoyed the local cuisine and the scrummy treats served by the restaurant.

ROHTANG PASS

It is impossible to not think of Rohtang Pass when thinking of Manali. Rohtang Pass is the most popular spot that people love to visit in Manali but make no mistake, as it is also the most dangerous spot in Manali.

To say that Rohtang Pass is a phenomenon is an understatement as the journey to the snow-capped mountains is not for the faint-hearted.

Meaning

The term “Rohtang” means “ground of corpses”. Countless people have died crossing the mountains in the past, which brings us to our previous warning. This is not for the faint-hearted.

A challenging trip

Bikers and adventure lovers who love to take on a challenge will certainly fall in love with Rohtang Pass as it offers them exactly what they seek. Rohtang Pass is the perfect example of a challenging trip.

The name does little to deter people from making the journey as the place is flocked by an endless number of people just the same. I did a bike trip some time back, check out this video.

The Danger

Rohtang Pass is open to the public during the summers, but it is less accessible during winters due to the increased risk. The roads can get slippery; the fog can make things difficult, and the curvy roads, along with the harsh weather, make Rohtang Pass during winters extremely dangerous.

The Reward

It is easier to face the challenge during the summer as the risk is significantly reduced. The thrill and excitement associated with this trip are certainly worth it, as a result, is the fresh mountain air and the breathtaking view of the snow-capped mountains.

SOLANG VALLEY

Solang Valley, which is exactly 13 kilometers from Manali, with its stunning snow-covered mountains, elegant pine trees, and breathtaking glaciers, is extremely popular among ski enthusiasts. People from all over the world come to enjoy skiing in the snow-covered mountains.

The scenes such as this make you wonder how small and insignificant we human beings are in the face of nature. As Gustave Flaubert once said – “Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world” It truly makes you appreciate the tiniest things in life.

Must-see

Solang Valley is another “not-to-be-missed” spot in Manali. The picturesque landscape of Solang Valley with its blue skies, snow-white mountains, green pine vegetation is certainly a sight to experience and behold. Its immense beauty remains unmatched from everything.

Peace-offering

The valley, located between Beas Kund and Solang Village, offers visitors the peace and tranquility they desire. Case in point, it is the perfect place for meditation, in my opinion.

Winter sports

Other than that, it is widely popular for winter sports activities such as skiing, as mentioned above, mountaineering, rafting, and paragliding. The entire view of the mountain and the skies as you paraglide is inexpressible. People also love to camp among the green meadows of the mountain.

All adventure lovers will attest that there is nothing more adrenaline-pumping than experiencing nature at its finest. As Paul Coelho once said – “If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine, it’s lethal” There is nothing sadder than missed opportunities in life.

The Bottom Line

In all its glory, Manali is a complete package in and of itself. All the nearby locations and “must-see” spots complement its beauty ten-fold. The tourists flock to this place all year round.

Newlyweds love spending their honeymoon in Manali, essentially making it a honeymoon hub for young couples. The mountains, snow, valley, waterfalls, rivers, trees all create a sensation that is enough to send shivers down your spine.

Manali is a place that accepts and caters to everyone’s demands alike. It is everything people say it is, and it certainly lives up to its hype.

India is a country with rich diversity that celebrates its differences. There are so many festivals that it is easy to lose count. In Jaipur alone, festivals exist in abundance. There is not a month that goes by without some festival. One of the biggest festivals in Jaipur is Makar Sankranti which is celebrated on the 14th of January every year.

It is the first festival of the year which is why people celebrate it with great enthusiasm and zeal. Kids, in particular, are extremely fond of this festival due to the involvement of kites.

Kites are an integral part of Makar Sankranti in Jaipur. Kites make this festival more exciting. Since most of the festivals in India follow the lunar calendar, their dates constantly change but Makar Sankranti is one festival that follows the solar calendar which is why its date remains unchanged.

Meaning of the festival

Makar Sankranti is one of the most beloved Hindu festivals observed by the people of India. It is celebrated in different ways in different parts of the country.

The festival is observed in honor of the Sun God. The term “Makar” means “Capricorn – the Zodiac sign” and the term “Sankranti” means “change” or “transition”. In short, this festival marks the first day of the sun’s transition into the Capricorn zodiac sign. Every month, the sun makes a transition from one Rashi (zodiac sign) to another. When this transition occurs, a Sankranti is observed. Makar Sankranti, in particular, is observed when the sun makes its first transition of the new year. Everyone is aware that this auspicious festival is celebrated in the month of January.

The date of the festival also remains unchanged. It is celebrated on the 14th of January every year. In some rare cases, it is also celebrated on the 15th of January, as was evident for the year 2020.

Meaning of Makar Sankranti

As mentioned previously, there are several Sankrantis that occur throughout the year. The two most important Sankrantis are Makar Sankranti and Karka Sankranti. Makar Sankranti occurs during the winter solstice and Karka Sankranti occurs immediately after the summer solstice.

Unlike other Hindu festivals, the date of Makar Sankranti is fixed. This is because the sun’s first zodiac transition into Capricorn always falls at the start of the new year. Since this is the first religious festival of the year, it is celebrated with much enthusiasm and zeal. It is a major Hindu festival celebrated by Indians from all over the world

Cultural significance of Makar Sankranti

The festival is known by many different names in different states. The festival signals the end of winter and the beginning of spring. The cultural significance of this festival varies from state to state.

Each state observes and welcomes the new harvest season according to its cultural rituals. The festival is known by various names depending on where it is observed.

In Maharashtra, it is observed by the name of Poush Sankranti. Assamese people observe this festival by the name of Magh Bihu. In Tamil Nadu, it is known by the name of Thai Pongal or simply Pongal.

Sikh communities residing in Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh observe Lohri the day before Makar Sankranti. They welcome the harvesting season by wearing vibrant colors, doing the bhangra (a dance form), and lighting a bonfire to celebrate the event. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, kite-flying is observed.

The festival is symbolic of the age-old triumph of good over evil. It is said that the festival is named after Sankranti, a popular Hindu God, who is renowned for defeating the monster Sankarasur.

The triumph over evil is what makes this festival so auspicious. People believe in taking pavitra snaans or holy baths to absolve them of all their sins.

This rite is said to be very important for the people of India because it symbolizes new beginnings. The arrival of spring brings with it hope and new beginnings.

The symbolism behind the festival

The movement of the sun from Tropic of Cancer to Tropic of Capricorn is seen as Sun God visiting his son, Saturn. The Zodiac sign of Saturn is Capricorn according to ancient belief.

According to popular belief, the Sun God pays a visit to his son, Saturn, every year in the month of January to stay with him for a while.

This belief implies that we should let go of our bitterness and resentment and show care and affection towards others by accepting love over hate. The festival “Makar Sankranti” is symbolic of “change” just like the new year brings hope for change. People get together and forge cordial connections with each other.

The whole environment is extremely jovial which is why people forget any and all grudges or resentment they have to enjoy the auspicious event. Makar Sankranti is a day to rejoice because of the cheerful environment created by everyone.

While the older generation observes and makes comments, the younger generation is entrusted with the task of holding charkis, and middle-aged persons actively participate in kite flying.

With almost everyone participating in the activity of lighting lamps, the sky looks beautiful and lit. The floating lamps make for a great sight which is another reason why people in Jaipur love to celebrate Makar Sankranti.

The first Temple of Jaipur: Garh Ganesh Temple

In the North of Jaipur, Situated on top of the Nahargarh hills, near Brahmapuri, is the abode of the Lord of wisdom, prosperity, and intellect, Lord Ganesha, The Garh Ganesha temple.

Though there are a lot of Ganesha temples in India, and of course Rajasthan, this temple is unique in its own ways. The temple is situated near the Amer fort and Jal mahal.

It is on the top so that Lord Ganesha can bless the city’s residents. Lord Ganesha is established in the child from inside the sanctorium – Viagra Purushakriti, without the trunk. The peaceful energy inside the temple makes you feel at peace.

The Bards of Jaipur have written poems about Lord Garh Ganesh. One of them is this one;

“Ganh Ganesh se naam yako,

For those who read Hindu mythology, there is a popular legend that Goddess Parvati, the wife of the Almighty Lord Shiva, created Lord Ganesha from the dirt. When Parvati was going for a bath, she asked Ganesha to guard the place so that no one entered the sacred site. The Father and Son duo had never met.

The former entered Kailash and began to search for Parvati. Ganesha denied the entry even after Shiva told him that he was the father of Ganesha. But the cute kid Ganesha was not ready to listen to his own father as he did not know that Lord Shiva was his father. The wrath of Lord Shiva and the promise bound Lord Ganesha got into a fight.

The War began in which Shiva cut the Human head of Lord Ganesha. When Goddess Parvati came out of her bath and came to know what had conspired when she was not present, she asked Lord Shiva to forgive their son and make him alive again.

Lord Shiva replaced Lord Ganesha’s cut head with an Elephant head and brought him back to life. Garh Ganesh is the only temple where the human form of Lord Ganesha is worshipped.

Once Lord Kartikeya, the first son of Shiva and Parvati, Lord Ganesha started fighting over who was more powerful. Lord Shiva and Parvati intertwined, and it was decided that he who completed three complete circles of the world would be superior.

Kartikeya embarked on his quest to encircle the world thrice and win the competition. Lord Ganesha stood there and, after a while, completed three circles around his parents. When Lord Shiva and Parvati asked him what he was doing, Lord Ganesha replied that his whole world resided in his parents.

Thus, he has completed the challenge. God and Goddess were happy with his answer. When Kartikeya returned tired and feeling triumphant, he was told how Ganesha had won the competition. After that, Ganesha got the title of Prathampujya, or One who is worshipped first.

Today, Lord Ganesha is worshipped all over the World in the same form as he became after the replacement of his head. The Garh Ganesha temple is the only temple where Ganesha is present in the Child (human) form without a trunk or the Purushakriti as it is famous. The uniqueness of the temple draws devotees from near and far. Devotees visit the temple from abroad as well to seek Almighty’s blessings.

History of the Blissful Garh Ganesh atop Aravali Hills

The founder of Jaipur, the great Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, was a polymath. People said that he knew Tantra, Mantra, and Yantra too. He laid the cornerstone of Jaipur and built Jantar Mantar, the oldest working solar dial in India.

He was the first person to perform an Ashwamedha Yajna in Kaliyuga. After completing the Yajna, he found this temple in the 18th century. The idol is so placed inside the temple that the king could see the idol from the balcony of Chandra Mahal of City Palace, Jaipur, with the help of binoculars. The temple is said to be more than 450 years old.

The king bought a Gujrati mahant for the worship of God. Since then, their family has been taking care of the temple. The 13th generation heir of the family, Mahant Pradeep Audichya, can be found in the temple. Only after the consecration of Lord Ganesha Idol, the city’s foundation was laid.

Temple of the almighty Lord Ganesha – Garh Ganesh

The temple is called ‘Garh Ganesha’ because Lord Ganesha is present inside a Garh, which literally means a fort. It looks like a crown on the top of a hill, as seen from far away. The temple was the first temple of Jaipur.

It was built as the stone laying of Jaipur after the Ashvamedha Yagya by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh. As mentioned earlier, this temple is situated near Jalmahal on the one side of the Nahargarh fort. There are Gaitore Chhatris on one side.

There is a parking space on the base of hills where vehicles can be parked. The temple is at the top of the mountain. One of the two routes is taken to reach the top. There are 365 stairs to the top of the main route.

Each symbolizes a day ultimately leading to the Darshana of Lord Ganesha. There is another trail route leading to the top, but a staircase has also been built here.

The staircase makes it easy for you to reach atop and enjoy the spiritual bliss and the view of the pink city. After this little Climbup, at the end of the stairs, there are two mooshaks, considered to be the vehicle of Lord Ganesha on each side.

It is said that If one whispers their wishes in their ears, they convey it to the Lord Ganesha, who fulfills all the desires of those with a pure heart.

Inside the temple resides the Lord Ganesha himself in the Child form or Purushakriti. The form has been made with the ashes of the Ashwamedha Yajna performed by the Maharaja.

The Idol is south facing so that Lord Ganesha, the Vighnaharta, can see the city and remove all the obstacles in people’s lives. The Idol is so placed that Maharaja could see it from the Chandra mahal.

The Palace was the King’s residence in the City palace with the help of a pair of binoculars. It is said that Maharajas started their day only after praying to Lord Garh Ganesha and Govind Dev Ji. The temple is situated at such an altitude that one can enjoy a magnificent view of Jaipur from here.

Timings and events at the Garh Ganesh Temple

The Garh Ganesh temple is open for devotees from 7 am to 12 pm and then from 4 pm to 8 pm. On the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapad Shukla Paksha, the fair of five days is organized every year.

If you are visiting around this time, you must not miss this extravagant event. Also, on the first Wednesday after Diwali, anna-koot is celebrated in the temple. The last Wednesday of ‘Paush month’ is celebrated by organizing ‘Paush bade.’ On such occasions, Lakhs of visitors come to the temple to get blessed and celebrate the joyous event.

Photography is not allowed inside the temple.
As it is a long way uphill, visitors are recommended to be fit or opt for the left trail, which is relatively easier to climb. But it does not have any railings to hold. You must carry a water bottle and some snacks while embarking on the journey.
