I was staying at Adventura Palm valley resort and I always wanted to cover Neelkanth Mahadev on foot. Yes, you hear it right on foot. This temple is around 13 KM from the campsite. So I started early and left my camp. The campsite was completely booked because of Holi, so I had to pitch my own tent.

I walked all the way from my campsite to Neelkanth, approx 11 KM uphill.

History of Neelkanth Mahadev in Rishikesh

One of the most famous incidents in the history of Hindu mythology is the occurrence of Samudra Manthan.

Neelkanth Mahadev in RIshikesh

Dating back to the era of asuras and devas, the renowned episode marked the churning of the ocean. The churning of the sea was an attempt to pursue Amrit- the holy nectar.

Little was it known that a noticeable amount of poison accompanied the market. The toxicity of the venom was such that it could quickly destroy all forms of creation.

Lord Shiva decided to consume the poison with no option left, also called ‘Halalal.’ But instead of swallowing the poison, Lord Shiva kept it in his throat, which led to inflammation.

His throat turned blue, hence giving him the name, Neelkanth. To reduce the pain and inflammation in his throat, Lord Shiva decided to meditate underneath a Peepal tree. He meditated under it for about 60,000 years and established a holy clod called Pind. This is where the Neelkanth Mahadev temple is located now.

Where is Neelkanth Mahadev located?

Neelkanth Mahadev is situated amidst a dense forest at an altitude of 1675 m on the hilltop of Swarg Ashram.

The temple is about 32 km from the sacred city in Uttarakhand, Rishikesh. Inside the holy place sits the Shivalingam, known to be ages old. The glorious Shivalingam is beautifully decorated with fresh flowers and fruits every day.

The temple’s outer walls are decorated with carvings related to the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). An 11 km trek is also available to reach the temple via Swarga Ashram. The trekking route is a steep climb up the hill.

The Saga of Bijli Mahadev in Kullu

The busy schedules, late-night work calls, lack of adequate sleep, and ill-health have made our lifestyles altogether stressed. We all long for getaways in the mountains covered with lush green grass and blanketed by the rays of sunshine.

One of the best places to visit, where you can be completely free from the worries of life, is Himachal Pradesh. Himachal is the province of snow-laden mountains and a potpourri of flora and fauna.

Tourists visit Himachal throughout the year. In summers, the place offers pleasant weather and several sightseeing opportunities. In the winter season, most of the cities and towns in Himachal are covered with snow-capped peaks, breathtaking views, and frozen lakes. Kullu is one such location in Himachal frequented by tourists throughout the year.

The history and culture of Kullu fascinate many and invite them to divulge into their diversities. As it presents a lot of tourist spots, the Bijli Mahadev Temple is one of them. People from various religions visit the holy shrine and experience the spiritual aura.

I went to this place a few years back, check out my vlog when we trekked, and did downhill cycling at this place. Don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel.

History of Bijli Mahadev in Kullu

Himachal Pradesh is popularly called the ‘Dev Bhoomi,’ meaning ‘The Land of Gods and Goddesses.’

One of the most visited shrines in Himachal’s Kullu is the Bijli Mahadev Temple.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located near the meeting point of the Beas and Parvati rivers. It is believed that a demon named Kulant wanted to submerge the valley by stopping the flow of these rivers.

His ill plan included ending every creature on Earth. As soon as Lord Shiva found out about this plan, he decided to stop the demon from giving life to his strategies. Lord Shiva confronted the devil and asked him to look back at his tail, telling him it had caught fire.

Lord Shiva used his trident to kill him as soon as the demon looked back. His dead body fell all over the valley. Bijli Mahadev temple was formed on the mountain top where this incident took place.

The locals of Kullu describe the temple as an honor to Lord Shiva. Many believe that after putting an end to the demon’s ill plans, Lord Shiva went to Lord Indra and asked him to strike the mountain with lightning every twelve years.

The Bijli Mahadev temple has a shiva-linga inside it, and people from all over India visit to worship it.

The legend also says that the lightning straight away passes through the ceiling of the temple and strikes the shiva-linga as Lord Shiva did not want his devotees and the residents of the place harmed.

After every twelve years, the electric discharge strikes the shiva-linga and causes it to break into small fragments. The priests and the locals then gather all the pieces of the shiva-linga and restore them using butter and sattu atta. The place’s residents believe that Lord Shiva protects their valley from all calamities, especially thunderstorms.

The temple faces a violent thunderstorm every time, thus saving the lives of all the locals. The story of electric discharge and its legend gives the name ‘Bijli Mahadev’ to the holy temple.

As a place where you can see nature at its best, Himachal is also the land of peace and joy. The number of religious sites reflects this place’s divinity and calmness. Hindu temples and Himachal abate many sacred shrines, including Gurudwaras and monasteries, thus proving the place’s diversity in faith and culture.

Where is Bijli Mahadev located?

Bijli Mahadev temple is located in Himachal Pradesh, specifically in Kullu.

This place is at a height of 2,460 m above sea level. The temple is situated 20 km from the central Kullu valley.

Located at the top-most end of Mathan hill, this place offers magnificent scenic views of the Kullu and Parvati valleys.

If you visit this place, it is nearly impossible to take your eyes off the mesmerizing view of the valley. The locals believe that the Kullu valley has been blessed and protected by Lord Shiva ever since, and this gifted beauty radiates in Kullu valley throughout the year.

The temple is located at a 3 km trek from a parking base in Kullu, ideal for beginners. The hike is not a hard one. However, the initial path is a little steep. After this steep stretch, the trek offers a leveled way that is easy to cover. As the winter season approaches, the path gets covered with thin ice and becomes slippery. Hence precautions, in this case, must be taken.

The course for the trek is a beautiful one and is covered with pine and deodar trees. The breathtaking beauty of this trek makes it a memorable experience. For many people, the path offers rejuvenation instead of tiredness.

One can apply for the pass online to travel through, valid for 24 hours, to and fro. So, one needs to plan ahead of time.

A day off to the vista point of Rohtang Pass is one of the most important attractions of the itinerary. Due to its natural beauty, Rohtang Pass is a favorite among the community of film directors.

Many blockbusters ranging from ‘Jab We Met’ to ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’ have been shot here. A peculiar fact behind the place’s name is that it was named so because many people working in CBRE died while trying to cross this treacherous stretch.

Adventurous activities offered here are skiing, sled ride, mountain biking, and tire drop. As it can get a bit rough, one must take proper care. Gear for these activities is available for a reasonable rent.

Rohtang is number 10th on our list of places to see in Manali.

East of the Rohtang pass takes 6 km from Gulaba village to reach here and can also be traced on the trek from the Vashishth temple uphill.

It is a natural formation and is a favorite picnic spot for people. It is also famous for exploring nature’s creation from the inside.

En route to the village!

Mere words are not enough to explain the beauty of the surroundings while trekking up to the cave.

The cave is a narrow path into a hill with no visibility after a point. One has to find their own way inside the cave in the dark using torches or flashlights. The passage is uneven, and it makes the activity more thrilling. After a bit of distance inside, one has to descend to reach the base. Taking around 45 mins. To cover, it is a wholesome thrilling experience.

Our visit to Club Nirvana cafe in Manali

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” This famous quote by Lao Tzu holds great significance in my life. We all dream of going to places we have never been but only a few get to turn that dream into a reality. Club Nirvana is one such place in the heart of old Manali, on the clubhouse road.

It’s all about experiencing life, as you only live once, and if you do it right the first time, once is enough. All it takes is a single step and the rest, as they say, is history.

Taking the first step to Club Nirvana

Our journey to our dreamland began with a single step too. We took our cycles out and boarded a bus to Manali via Chandigarh. Although our first stop was at Cafe Babushka in Vashisht. I always will and have the plan to stay at Club Nirvana, reason simply because this is a property hosted by my friend Arjun.

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller” – Ibn Battuta. This is one of my favorite travel quotes. Every travel journey is an experience that one registers in their brain and remembers for a lifetime.
