How is everybody? I hope good and making travel plans for Ladakh. I visited prohibited areas of Ladakh in the year 2019. You can watch all my videos on my YouTube channel here. However, before you enter these areas you need to have an Inner Line Permit for Ladakh. This permit is also called the ILP for Ladakh in short. This permit covers remote areas of Ladakh. Pangong lake permit & Permit for Khardung la Pass are the same and these places are mentioned in the ILP.
I was first confused as there were a plethora of articles on getting the permits to Ladakh. However, none had accurate information. In fact, we got to know the reality when we got the permits ourselves.
So, without any delay let me guide you in getting this legal document which will take you to your favorite places in Ladakh.
Also, for the rest of the article, I would refer to this permit as ILP since we all know the full form which is the inner line permit for Ladakh.
A little history of permits in Ladakh
From early April 2017, the government of India made it mandatory to get a permit in order to visit the prohibited areas of Ladakh.
This is applicable to both domestic and foreign tourists. The terms and conditions of this permit differ for both domestic and foreign tourists. There are two most adorable places that everyone wants to go to when they visit Ladakh.

What is the Inner line permit?
ILP is a document issued by the government of India that allows tourists to visit protected areas in the country. Not just Ladakh but other areas too. In this article, we will talk only about the ILP for Ladakh.
Obtaining ILP for Ladakh is mandatory for everyone who is not a resident of Jammu & Kashmir and intends to visit protected areas in Ladakh.

Now some terms are different for Indians and foreigners. Let us have a look at these terms.
For Indians, the permit is valid for three weeks from the date of issue however, for foreigners, it’s one week. Most noteworthy, there is no limit on how many times you visit a place till the time you have got the required permits.
How much do I have to pay for ILP?
The authorities charge a total of INR 440 per person with the break up as given below. This is applicable to both Indians and foreign tourists.

Which areas need an Inner Line Permit for Ladakh?
The scanned copy that I showed has circuits. This means that places are clubbed together for the convenience of the tourists. Below are the places that require ILP.
Applying for Inner Line Permit for Ladakh is very easy. You need to get to their online portal which is http://lahdclehpermit.in/ and fill out your details.
The online process can get a little confusing for a lot of folks so let me show you the steps you need to follow on the portal.
Online Procedure for Inner Line Permit for Ladakh.
Go to http://lahdclehpermit.in/ and when the page loads up click on the half circle that says “Issue”.
Next, you need to specify if you are a domestic or foreign tourist, so in our case, we will continue with domestic.
Now once you click domestic it will take you to a page where you need to fill in your complete details. This page is elaborate and you will spend quite a time filling this.
Click next and then fill out your name, year of travel, your state, and your gender.
Once you fill-up the above details you will see a drop-down with different identity proofs listed.
Select the ID and then fill in the information from your ID proof. ID’s accepted are Aadhar Card, Driving License, Passport, or Voter ID number.
Now mention your complete address.
Under the section “Issue permit” select “directly”
Now you need to mention your date of arrival in the pop-up calendar when you click on “Date of arrival”
The information filling part is over now. You need to make sure that the information is correct as post this step you won’t be able to correct anything.

If the information is correct click on submit. If there is no error you will get a pop up saying that you have been successfully registered.
Now on the page that opens up, you need to decide the circuit for which you want the permit.
At the bottom again select your date of arrival and date of departure from Ladakh.
Finally, click the “apply” button to complete the process.
Once clicked you should get a pop up saying that the circuit has been assigned successfully.
A new pop up comes which says “inserted successfully”, click OK.
Now you will come to a page where all your details will be mentioned. Details like your name, state, ID, and fee structure.
You need to take a print out of it and get a few copies.
How do I pay the permit fee?
Unfortunately, there is no option of paying the fees online at this point in time. You need to take the print out of the form along with a copy of it and get it stamped and signed from the office in Leh city market.

Key instructions from the administration for Inner Line Permit for Ladakh.
There are a few things that are specified by the administration to ensure that there is no confusion while applying for the permits. Check these points below.
Children below the age of 12 and the resident of Jammu % Kashmir are exempted from the permit, they don’t need one.
The applicants are expected to keep enough copies of the permit as they need to submit a copy at each checkpoint where ever they are going.

Dealing with pain areas while cycling can be tough. This article is specific about dealing with pain in your wrist while cycling. Wrist pain while cycling is very common and most of the cyclists that I meet have gone through this at some point in time. Some like me also encounter handlebar palsy, which relates to your fingers going numb. The first time when my fingers got numb while cycling was actually funny. Never experienced it before. This was on my 300 KM brevet ride.
Let us get to the bottom of it.
This started happening to me when I got into brevet races. The 200 KM brevet was fine and was less tiring for my hands. However, in further races numbness crept in. Especially in my middle finger, ring finger, and pinky.
Now, this was new to me so I relaxed for a few minutes took a break, and then started again. Just because of this numbness that I was going through I took more breaks than usual in my brevet.
I knew about the saddle soreness and back pain while cycling, as I wrote about them and I knew how to counteract them. However, for this numbness, I had no clue how to make it go away.
So before we get to the ways to prevent this let us understand what exactly is this?
Handlebar palsy

For people who might be wondering what is the meaning of palsy, here is the definition.
This article has a lot of inputs from a lot of doctors as well from the cycling community, so here is what they have to say about handlebar palsy.
Fingers numb while cycling is a result of compression of Ulnar nerve, hence it is also called as Ulnar palsy.
This is caused due to compression or hyperextension of the Ulnar nerve which enervates your fingers. This tends to cause a state of numbness in your fingers.
Ulnar nerve in your hand which causes this palsy
Hand pain while cycling is very common especially with cyclists riding long distances on the flat handlebar or on the drops.
If you have this quite often our team of doctors who are also cyclists would advise you to take immediate medical help.
This can cause problems in hand movement in the future if not taken care of and it does take a lot of time to get resolved.
However, we would be discussing few measures that you can take to counteract this while on your ride.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Let us look at the diagram that I shared earlier. If you notice there are two nerves that are mentioned. The one we talked about was the Ulnar nerve. The second one in discussion here is the Median nerve.

The syndrome mentioned above in the heading is caused by compression of Median nerve which in turn leads to hand pain while cycling.
This is characterized by numbness or tingling in the fingers and with me it especially happens in the ring and middle finger.
If you encounter this please seek medical help. This palsy will not only put you in an uncomfortable position but also will have an effect on your performance.
Wrist pain while cycling? Not to worry. Let us look at the preventive measures
1. A good bike fit
I would be honest with you all. This is the cause of everything that happens bad when you are on a bike when it comes to pain and aches.
One of the prime reasons for wrist pain while cycling is putting too much weight of your body on the handlebar.
Just imagine the amount of weight that your hand can actually hold vs the weight that you are putting on your wrist due to poor bike fit.
So no more low handlebar, bad stem height, high saddle post and no smaller or larger frames. Get a proper bike fit done and then ride.
2. Wrist pain while cycling due to poor quality of bar tape
This does have a great effect on getting the pressure off your hands. It might sound a minor trick and you might think that it might not have that great effect in increasing the pain in hands while cycling, but it’s the other way around.
I rode on my bike with a cheap bar tape that was company fitted. Then I got it changed to expensive but very comfortable bar tape.
Yes, it made a lot of difference, my rides were more comfortable and pain in hands while cycling was almost gone.
I have seen some professional cyclists putting gel and double bar taping on handlebars, it does again makes a difference as per them. This is what a professional rider Trilok had to say.
3. Padded gloves are a must
New riders might not invest in gloves, however, gloves does help in reducing pain in hands while cycling.
The functionality of gloves is to protect your hands in case you fall from your bike.
However, the padded gloves reduce the pressure which comes directly on your Ulnar nerve. This in turns reduces the pain in hands while cycling.
Especially if you find your fingers getting numb while cycling a good quality padded glove will help you. So I would advise you to invest in getting good quality gloves and none of that cheap quality stuff.
4 .Keep shifting your hand position
I always do this and it helps. Sometime I don’t even grab the handle bar when riding I just tuck my hands in my jersey and just pedal.
With practice I am sure a lot of cyclists might be riding without even need to grab the handle bar on an empty straight road.
When talking about road bikes, I usually change my hand positions to drops, or hood or top. Sometimes changing the hand position also depends on the kind of track/road you are riding.
So just keep changing your hand positions and you will be fine.
5. Relax your hands and body
I have seen some cyclists holding the handlebar and drop as if they are taking out their frustration. I know at inclines you might grip your handlebars a little too tight but a nice way of climbing incline would be resting your hands on the handle or bar top.
This reduces the extra pressure on your wrist.
Do not grip the handle hard rather keep the grip relax. Also, try to keep your upper body relax too.
Reducing wrist pain while cycling in a nutshell
Handlebar palsy or numbness can really be annoying when riding long distances. However, if you keep in mind the above mentioned 5 tricks you would enjoy your ride without hiccups.

I love using my GoPro 7 black for capturing everything around me. I like making GoPro time lapse a lot. I keep on getting a lot of questions related to GoPro’s. One specific question that I get very often is, “How to use time-lapse in GoPro?”. In this article, I would tell you everything about the time-lapse capturing features and modes which are there are in GoPro’s. I would be using my Hero GoPro 7 Black edition for all the comparison videos and for the tutorial I use my Canon 1200 D which is my old but valuable DSLR. In this tutorial, we would discuss time wrap video, time-lapse video, time-lapse photo & night lapse photo.

There are 4 modes of capture when we talk about the time-lapse feature in this action camera. Let me tell you about each one of them in detail.
Accessing the time-lapse mode in GoPro is easy you just need to press the power button and then select the time-lapse option leaving out the video and photo option. Once you are in this mode you will get options for further selecting the subcategories.
These sub-options are time wrap video, time-lapse video, time-lapse photo & night lapse photo.
Time wrap video option in GoPro
In the earlier versions, this feature was not there. This has been introduced in GoPro Hero 7. I consider this feature as a unique combination of time-lapse video feature and the amazing hyper smooth feature of GoPro 7.
This feature allows you to capture videos in fast intervals without losing the element of smoothness in the video. Unlike in time-lapse video mode where you need to keep your camera steady, in this mode, you can move your camera while making a video.
You do not need to have a tripod or keep your camera steady in this mode unless you are choosing high intervals. Furthermore, there are setting that you can change to get the desired results in your video.
Aspect ratio vs resolution
Now if you talk about aspect ratio and the corresponding resolutions there are few choices you got. Take a look at the table below.

Now you can make a video in 4K or 2.7K, however, ensure that you have near enough processing power in your computer to handle these ratios. The files are going to be too heavy.
I make use of 16:9 aspect ratio with resolution as 1080.
The next question that comes in mind is that how much will be the length of the videos at different time intervals or speeds?
Take a look at the table below for recording time when choosing different intervals.
Based on the above tables and stats ask your self some basic questions.
How much stability do you need?
What is the length of the activity?
How long video will be?
Once you answer these questions you would automatically be able to select the settings. This takes time and you need to get through hands-on to get accustomed.
From my experience, I would suggest that use the 10X which is the default one. This speed is optimized for a wide variety of activities.
What I recommend!
Speeds between 2X to 5X is ideal for activities like driving and riding through a picturesque route.
For hiking and exploring which I love a lot, I use the default speed of 10X.
Activities where there is a lot of movement and sudden change of frame like running, mountain biking uses a high speed like 15X to 30X.
Tips from professionals
For ideal results use the 10X speed as this goes for most of the activities.
If you zoom while making a video you will get a more stable video. Try it, it worked for me.
Higher speed will have better stabilization as there are more frames captured which can blend it easily to created smooth videos.

Using the GoPro Time-lapse Video
The second option is the GoPro time-lapse video feature. You can select it using the same way as mentioned above.
When you are in the time-wrap mode touch the icon on the left which will give you four options. One of them will be the time-lapse video. Unlike the time warp mode, you need to keep your GoPro on a stable surface or use a tripod or GoPro shorty.
This mode gives you results only when the camera is stable else you will get a shaky video which will be of no use. This mode is not new. it has been a part of GoPro since people were using GoPro 4. They just kept on making it better and better.
This mode like time warp comes with a bunch of different settings that you can use as per your shoot requirement.
How to choose the settings?
We come back to square one. Like the way, I suggested you ask few questions to yourself before choosing settings for a time warp, so the same as the time-lapse video.
However, I would suggest you to take a look at the table below.

Time-lapse photo mode in Gopro
There is another mode for time-lapse that not a lot of people use. This is on GoPro’s and called a time-lapse photo. All this mode does is helps you to create a time-lapse video.
Wait a minute. You must be thinking we already discussed the time-lapse video, why is this mode even there? There is a difference between these two modes even though the output will be a time-lapse video.
Difference between time-lapse video and photo?
Ideally, both these modes give you the output as a time-lapse video. However, there are a few differences here. Both these modes capture images in set intervals (as you choose). In a time-lapse video, the output you get is a nice video as GoPro does the job of combining the images together.
On the contrary, in the photo mode, you get a bunch of images as per the interval you chose. What you need to do is get on video editing software and join them together to make a time-lapse video. This is the biggest difference between the two modes.
So the questions is that when we have the time-lapse video mode why do we actually need another photo mode here?
Let me summarize the pros and cons here
Firstly, you do not need to put in the effort in editing when using the video mode, however, in photo mode you need to stitch your images together to make a time-lapse video.
Time-lapse photo mode gives you more flexibility when editing. Consider this as a photographer clicking in RAW to get more control over their images.
When creating a time-lapse video the GoPro adjusts the lighting according to the starting of the scene and then stays as it is. On the contrary, photo mode keeps adjusting the settings as per the scene at present. In other words, photo mode will come in handy while capturing the time-lapse of sunset and sunrise as the light changes drastically.
The file size of the photo mode will always be heavy when compared with the normal time-lapse video mode. When comparing the file size the photo mode size was heavier than the normal time-lapse video more by 5 times.

Night lapse photo mode in GoPro
The last mode is the night lapse photo mode in GoPro that we would talk about here. As the name suggests, this mode is used for capturing long shots during the night or in low light conditions.
This mode was there in the earlier versions of GoPro, however, in GoPro 7 Black and Fusion, it has been an epitome of success. In this mode, the settings give you more control over the settings that come into effect in the low light.

For e.g. you can choose longer shutter speeds depending on how much light your scene has. If the conditions are changing there is an auto function as well in this mode. That automatically checks the amount of light that is available and changes the shutter speed and ISO.

Use a tripod. No one likes the shaky videos. Especially when making a time-lapse video. I use GoPro shorty, and a few other stands and mounts. Just make sure that your camera is stable.
You need to carry extra batteries and a charger with you when making these videos. Time-lapse drains a lot of juice from your battery. I always keep two spare batteries in case I need to create a video for more than an hour.
Choosing the right interval is the key. Different intervals are used for capturing different activities. Use the interval right and you get awesome footage. Choose it wrong and no one will like to see your lapse.
Make sure that your memory card is of class 10 or above. You need to have a lot of space too for these kinds of videos as they take up a lot of space. I use a card of 64 GB whenever I am shooting time-lapse videos.
